Fourth of July 2016

Our girls talked us into going to Newport for the 4th of July celebration. On Tuesday, June 28, we dropped the ball and headed for Third Beach with our friends the Daleys travelling south on the Sakonnet River. Passing under the bridge and narrows against the tide made for some interesting maneuvering and a power up on our boat.

Notice the narrow passage through
the 2 markers!

Approaching the Mt Hope Bridge
Love this lighthouse!

Both boats picked up a town mooring and decided to share appetizers and dinner. It was Peter's birthday so a celebration was in order. The next morning we left for Newport while the Daleys stayed to meet other friends joining them for the night.

We arrived in Newport by mid morning and picked up town mooring #2, just off the tip of Goat Island......our home for the next 6 days.

It has been a while since the last posting on the blog. We are still in East Greenwich Cove on our mooring going over boat systems. Peter has been working on the dinghy davit system which we needed before taking an extended trip out of the cove. It took a combination of Kato Marine and the local Rigging Shop to get our davit system up and fully supported. We were really spoiled with the easy lift system we had on our sailboat with the radar arch so this comes in as a close second. Of course like renovating a house there is always something else that needs fixing. We need a new flag mount and possibly redo our stern navigation light.

Jane has been busy trying to get on top of compounding and waxing the white fiberglass around the cabin. It has been difficult finding the right method and combination of products to get the results looking smooth and shiny. She bought a polisher/buffer to help. It will probably take the summer to get the cabin top completed before we head south.

One trip out of Greenwich Cove was close by for the day to view the Quonset Air Show from the water. We had Jane's brother, Jim, Sarah & Sophia and friends Bill & Linda Daley aboard for the show and cookout. It was a great time before returning in the rain.

Sophia loves coming out to "her" boat. Her favorite place is in Grammy and Grampy's cabin under the quilt. She can play with her toys and even watch cartoons.
Riding the launch out to Kinvara II

Her favorite place!!

We have discovered a great breakfast place in the center of East Greenwich called Jiggers Diner. It is a small dining car built in Worcester, MA and has 7 booths and counter space. Space is limited so you have to time your visit early and never on a Sunday!!

Peter installed our dinghy davits and they work really well. so far so good! Now we can be mobile on the boat and leave our mooring basin.

The final step toward making the boat ours was changing the name. Our friends Bill and Linda Daley provided the reading, Jane provided large bottles of champagne, and the Yacht Club provided a dock space for 2 nights. We toasted and drank our way through de-naming Blue Charm and re-naming it Kinvara II. She is officially Kinvara II on the high seas.

Hailing port of Newport, RI still to be added

Jane brought her sewing machine and tested using it on the boat for space and power consumption. It uses very little power and the space is luxurious compared to our sail boat. there are projects to be done in the near future!!

Our folding table is just the right size.

The desk area is perfect for
pinning and cutting

Couldn't resist making a dress for Sophia!
