A Busy Week Aboard

Thursday, June 9, 2013

This has been a very busy time aboard m/v Kinvara II. We had our interview with the nominating board of East Greenwich Yacht Club and were accepted as new members on Friday, June 3. We have met a few people so far and are exploring the activities they have to offer. Everyone from staff to members have been so helpful. We have a mooring next to Goddard State Park, parking for our car, launch service every day and a dinghy dock, cookout facilities, function room, members lounge, bar, covered deck area, and activities planned over the summer. This location is 10 minutes away from Sarah's home and 50 minutes away from Natalie's home. We can now fly the EGYC burgee!!
Thanks to our friends and members
Bill and Linda for the medium size burgee.
The club gave us a small one which we will use also.
We have spent each day making lists of things to do aboard to make this boat our own. There have been some repairs which have needed to be done. Our washing machine worked once then decided to stop with a big bang (literally)! It cannot be repaired since parts can not be ordered. This was extremely disappointing since it was one of the attractions of this boat. Our dryer works great though so that is good. We are repairing the starboard windscreen wiper motor as that decided to stop during a rough crossing and our aft cabin shower sump pump has been replaced.
Most of the storage spaces have been thoroughly worked through to actually see what is on the boat. We found a winter canvas cover for the fly-bridge and a boarding ladder which was nice since it is extremely difficult to board from a dock without the ladder or steps. There are loads of cleaning supplies and spare parts aboard also. One job on the list very soon is a thorough cleaning of the bilge areas.
Peter has ordered dinghy davits so our new dinghy can be carried off the transom. That will hopefully be done by the weekend.  Yesterday we started removing the old name decals. We had to run the generator for a few hours to use a hairdryer in order to get the decals off. Then Goo Gone to remove the sticky residue and a good washing. We are now ready for our denaming/renaming ceremony where we invoke Poseidon and Neptune with copious amounts of champagne, or so we are told. More about that later. Last night as we were taking the dinghy back to the boat we saw the pair of swans floating by and a rainbow in the sky.

It takes lots of heat to peel away the letters.

Lots of polish and shine!
Should we have names?

Peter has company!!

Greenwich Cove

Friday, May 27, 2016 - Friday, June 3, 2016

A pair of snowy egrets
A pair of swans sunning
Our view of Goddard State Park

It was a beautiful morning in Newport Harbor but today was also the beginning of Memorial Day weekend. We decided to leave and head a little further North in Narragansett Bay to Greenwich Cove. We applied to become members of the East Greenwich Yacht Club and have a seasonal mooring waiting for us. So for the next week or so we will be transients there until our membership is finalized.  Our mooring spot is really beautiful. It is a little further in the cove but we are adjacent to Goddard State Park. We have enjoyed watching the wildlife there. Last night we saw 6 deer come down the wooded hill and frolic on the path by the water before disappearing again into the woods. We have watched hawks, osprey, swallows, a pair of swans, and even a pair of egrets.
This little swallow loves sitting on our bow pulpit
We have had difficulty getting internet to our boat even though we can access it easily from the Greenwich Yacht Club ashore. Peter installed our Wirie AP internet booster and Jane was able to pick up loads of signals. Only a few were open networks not requiring a password and most of those were Beacon Wifi which has a fee. We haven't decided yet if that is the route to go or get a cellular mifi.
